Purim Party
By Chloe Amaya (age 9)
This year’s Kehilat Chaverim Sunday School Purim Festival was a
blast!
One of the stations was the hamantaschen station where you
could make your own hamantaschen. People working at this
station included: Naomi Amaya, Clarissa Basch, Amy Gallent,
Nancy Malley, and Janet Able. The cookies turned out great. The
dough was already made, so all you had to do was cut out your
circle, fill the hamantaschen with your favorite fillings (prune,
raspberry, poppy seed, and apricot) and fold it all up into a triangle
to represent Hayman’s hat. After the festival, you cook the
hamantaschen at 350 degrees for approximently 10 to 15 minutes.
Another station was the grogger station which is the station to
make your own grogger. People who worked at this station were
Talia Markus, Jordi Hertz, and Sarah Berkowitz. At this station you
could fill up water bottles with beads and M&Ms. After, you had the
choice to decorate it with markers and stickers. We used the
groggers to make some noise whenever we hear the name
Hayman during the Megillah reading.
Next we read a Megillah. A Megillah is like a scroll that tells all
about the story of Queen Esther. The Megillah that we read was
very special because all of the students decorated it during
Sunday school. Each child read the part that they decorated.
Talia Basch (one of the students in the older class) was collecting
house hold items to give to My Sister’s Place. This is an
organization for homeless women and their children. Talia was
collecting these items for her Bat Mizvah service project.
At all of the Kehilat Chaverim services and holiday get togethers
we enjoy wonderful music played by our very own Sally Joe. At this
service she played great purim songs. During these songs each
child gets to participate in sing- a-longs.
Our purim service included a costume parade. Many children
dressed up and paraded around the room. Everybody who
partivipated got a prize. Costumes included hamantaschen,
rockstars, hippies, Mordechai, Super Woman, and astronauts.
Also a Mexican native!
This year’s Purim service was wonderful. I hope that everybody
can come to the next Kehilat Chaverim holiday event!

Sunday School Highlights
Youth Shabbat
Youth Shabbat Service was wonderful, with young folks
leading parts of the service in English and Hebrew, singing
with Salli-Jo's guitar accompaniment, and a child friendly
Parsha presentation by Herb Gerjuoy. The service was
facilitated by Karen Dworski with the support of Andrea
Cobrin-Long. The kids were attentive and on-task in the
service, and they seemed to really enjoy it. The congregation
gave rousing applause for the Sunday School and Bar and
Bat Mitavah kids at the end of the service. The Kiddush was
highlighted by an amazing Challah presentation - Allen
Kauders sculpted a pharaoh out of bread dough and Maggie
Cohen created a frog and matza bread to accompany
pharoah. We have such talent among us!
